Character Name: Mirai Kuriyama
Canon: Kyoukai no Kanata
Canon Point: Episode 9; exactly when she is about to stab her blade into Akihito in his youmu state.
Background/History:
Mirai Kuriyama's early childhood with filled with isolation. Born into a family with blood-manipulating powers, she was shunned from most of society due to her cursed blood. While it's not put into detail as to why this power is looked down upon the Spirit World Warriors Society other than the fact that it is seen heretical among them, Mirai still lived a life where she was locked away from a majority of the world. Adopted into the Inami Clan at a young age, she was still kept by herself until Yui Inami approached herself and befriended Mirai. This was the happiest point of Mirai's life, but was unfortunately short lived after the powerful youmu that goes by the name of the Hollow Shadow possessed Inami. With no other decision other than to kill her, Mirai stained her hands with the blood of her first and only friend at the time.
Years later, after being kicked out of the Inami home and forced to live in a cheap apartment while still attending high school, we are first introduced to Mirai when Akihito sees her at the top of the school roof. When he runs up to her and expresses that someone who looks so beautiful in glasses should not take their own life, she whispers underneath her breath before jumping over the fence distancing the two of them. With her blood sword in hand and standing before Akihito, she lunges her blade into his chest in attempts of killing of him. Once his immortality is brought to light, Mirai begins to chasing Akihito around the school after hours continuing to stab him. Despite his protests, she follows him, but her confidence suddenly disappears when the two of them are brought before a full-blooded youmu. She freezes, and even begins to tremble until finally another Spirit World Warrior by the name of Shizuku Ninomiya appears and takes care of the youmu for them. Shortly after this, Mirai admits that she had never killed a youmu before, which is a surprises Akihito considering the fact that she is a Spirit World Warrior. When she speaks of a youmu currently possessing her apartment and leaving her unable to live there properly, he encourages her to let it be her first kill. Fortunately enough, after a drawn out battle, Mirai is capable of killing the youmu with Akihito in the background encouraging her.
Days later, Mirai tells Akihito after paying for dinner that he should no longer meddle in her affairs. Her reasoning behind this because she has killed someone before, and has since carried this guilt on her shoulders. And despite her knowledge of Akihito being half-youmu, she states that she is not human due to this. She continues to distance herself from both Akihito and the Nase siblings despite their encouragement for her to interact with them, and even goes as far as throwing away a source of income back to Mitsuki Nase when she believes that it was out of pity. When Akihito approaches her with the ten thousand yen that the youmu cost, however, she continued to contradict herself by deny the money but still continuing to reach out for it.
Mirai then learns that the Hollow Shadow will be appearing in the town by their homeroom teacher, Shizuku, in which she makes the decision to face the powerful youmu despite the many warnings not to approach it. The Hollow Shadow is the one who killed Yui Inami, and Mirai sees this as her chance to act her revenge for the precious friend she lost years ago. Even when Akihtio tells Mirai that defeating the Hollow Shadow will change nothing, she's well aware of that, and still continues to face the youmu alone. Upon her arrival, she is faced with Yui's younger sister, Sakura Inami, who is bent on revenge not against the Hollow Shadow, but on Mirai Kuriyama. Mirai defends herself, but is hesitant on attacking Yui and loses a good amount of blood in the process which results to weakening her blood blade. Akihito somehow manages to separate the two of them, and both she and Akihito run away from Sakura and into a labyrinth created by the Hollow Shadow based on Mirai's memories.
While inside the labyrinth, the Hollow Shadow creates an illusion of Yui that causes Mirai to desperately chase after it. She did this until both she and Akihito were are the end of the train, in which the illusion disappeared and a much larger version of Yui was created and took Mirai into its hand. Another illusion of Yui is created, who grabs onto Mirai's neck and is ready to attack until Akihito throws Mirai's ring and it hits the rim of her glasses. Upon looking at the ring and remembering her past with Yui, she realizes that she can't keep chasing someone who is no longer here, and releases her blood in order to expose the Hollow Shadow's main body. Mirai destroys the body, which allows them to escape the labyrinth. She asks Akihito if she looks like a normal person, and almost immediately after his response, Akihito is possessed by the Hollow Shadow. He orders for her to stab him and release her blood, Mirai becomes hesitant, but in the end she drives her blade into his chest as Akihito screams in pain. The Hollow Shadow releases itself from Akihito, and Mirai finally defeats it.
However, in attempts of helping Akihito back up, Hiroomi Nase confronts Mirai and stops her. Both he and Ayaka Shindou, another youmu, create a barrier around Akihito as his half-youmu side begins to surface. Hiroomi promises to eliminate Akihito if the barrier is destroyed, and Mirai immediately protests. Akihito proves to be too powerful for the barrier, which results to Hiroomi, Ayaka, and Shizuku being knocked unconscious. Mirai stands, running up to Akihito and embracing him in order to release her blood once again. Fortunately, Akihito returns to his human half, but when awakes and apologizes for the deed, Mirai immediately cries into his chest, gripping onto him tightly and apologizing. Days later while they are eating, Akihito leaves to use the bathroom and asks if she still views him as a normal person. Her response?
"To me, you look like a creepy senpai with a thing for glasses."
Once they return to school, Mirai decides to succumb to the Akihito's pleads for her to come to the literary club, though continued to protest upon joining it. When she notices a Gardening Encyclopedia, however, she's quick to join once told that only club members are allowed to take them out of the room.
She, Akihito, and the Nase siblings travel to the Nase residence, where Mirai's license as a Spirit World Warrior confiscated by Izumi Nase for a month after breaking the rules and going after the Hollow Shadow. Mirai immediately panics, since killing youmu is her only source of income for both her rent and food. Afterwards, she and Mitsuki go out to eat and confront a youmu, in which they both defeat. Later that day, Mirai is offered a job by Ai Shindou, Ayaka's younger sister, which is actually a modeling job. She takes it due to her financial problems, and later attends the festival with Mitsuki and later meets up with Akihito and Hiroomi.
A few weeks later, Shizuku informs Mirai that Sakura Inami would be transferring into their school the next day. While she believes that it would be best for Mirai to report to Izumi and have her stop the transfer, Mirai decides not to do so. She believed that the Hollow Shadow would bring some closure for both herself and Sakura, but if she was still going to target her, then there is no point of her to continue running away. When she confronts Sakura, there is no hesitation in her actions while fighting her, and points out that Sakura does not have the abilities to become a Spirit World Warrior; but because of that, she promises to continue living her life as a Spirit World Warrior for both her and Yui. Sakura stops the attack, but when she does her weapon begins to absorb her, in which Mirai attacks it and saves her. Leaving Sakura behind in the sewers in which they fought in, she is later followed home by her and Mirai takes up the responsibility of taking care of both herself and Sakura.
In episode eight, the Calm approaches. the Calm is a stagnate time where everything comes to a halt, and all youmu are at a weakened state. Akihito shows proof in this by drifting to sleep on and off at random times, which brings concern for Mirai. When the Calm is finally there, Akihito's human side begins to reside as his youmu half begins to resurface. With him being at such a critical state, he is left in the care of both Ayaka and Ai, but surely enough Mirai's concern results to her returning so that she can be at Akihito's side. When she arrives, however, Ai is found knocked out and Akihito's youmu half has taken control of his body. When he retreats to the roof, she follows and finds Ayaka, who is still in her youmu state after her defeat from Miroku Fujima, a Spirit World Warrior who is an Interrogation Officer for the Spirit World Warrior Society. Izumi fights him off, and later confronts Akihito only for him to cause an explosion and finally retreat from the area.
She and the three Nase siblings go to search out for Akihito, in which Izumi tells Mirai that she will have to be the one to kill Akihito; the reason behind this is because the possibility that he will remain at his youmu half for the remainder of his life once the Calm ends.
Days go on, and the team is unable to find Akihito. Hiroomi approaches Mirai to speak to her privately, asking if she would truly taking Akihito's life when or if she finds him. She answers with hesitation that she will, which results to Hiroomi asking her to not kill him and instead contact him upon finding his youmu half. But as soon as she speaks to him about this, Mirai is seen later in a forest in the rain, breaking the Cage(or barrier) surrounding Akihito and confronting him. The two battle, and when he has weakened, Mirai removes her glasses and lunges her blade forward and into his chest.
And while this is the canon point in which Mirai is being brought to Haven, episode ten does reveal some flashback points that are important in terms of her history.
Mirai Kuriyama was brought to the city because of Izumi Nase's interest in her cursed blood. After introducing both herself and her powers to the head of the Nase household, she was introduced to Beyond the Boundary, an incredibly strong youmu who resided inside the body of a immortal half-youmu—Akihito Kanbara. Izumi's true intent on bringing Mirai to the city was because she believed that her cursed blood would be enough to kill Beyond the Boundary. This entire time she has kept this mission a secret, but in the end she could not find herself to kill him.
Which is why during the Calm, she used the power of her blood to force Beyond the Boundary from his body, which causes her to disappear.
Akihito Kanbara is then in a comatose state, where he dreams of a reality where Mirai is still there. Later into the dream, as he begins to wake, the Mirai in his dreams tells him how the "real" Mirai Kuriyama sacrificed herself in order for him to live, and thus disappeared from the real world. Before the dream ends, that Mirai attempts to kiss Akihito, but then chickens out before she disappears and Akihito wakes up. He wakes several months after Mirai's disappearance, and immediately begins searching for her.
Mirai is in actuality, inside a separate world where she attempts to defeat Beyond the Boundary. Creating a fake Akihito (unresponsive and hardly moves) to give her motivation and to continue pushing herself despite the months of fighting. When the Akihito in the real world finally realizes this, he Mitsuki, Hiroomi, and later his mother discuss how he is able to get inside the world that Mirai is currently occupying above the city and help her defeat Beyond the Boundary. While he does that, the Nase siblings (all three), and their teacher Shizuku go and fight Miroku Fujima, who was the source behind Beyond the Boundary's appearance. He is later defeated by Izumi Nase, but his true whereabouts remain unknown.
Mirai and Akihito fight against Beyond the Boundary and end up victorious. However, after their victory, when Mirai attempts to approach him, her legs shatters like glass and she is cemented to her current position. Asking him to approach her, pat her head, and thank her. Tears begin to fall as the realization of Beyond the Boundary leaving her body and returning to Akihito means that she will disappear from their world entirely. After her goodbye, her body continuing to shatter, Mirai finally disappears.
Winter approaches in the real world, and Akihito is haunted by Mirai's disappearance and keeps her ring on hand constantly. But one day, as he begins his walk back home after school, Mirai's ring disappears, and he is overwhelmed with an urge to check the school rooftop where they first met. Once there, he is met with a glasses-less Mirai, who he immediately comments on her appearance in which she responds with her usual, "You're unpleasant." He then gives her a pair of glasses, and Mirai smiles.
Personality:
"I stink horribly at this whole... living thing."
If someone were to pass Mirai Kuriyama in the hallway, she would be a person that they would easily forget. Not because of the fact that she has no redeeming qualities to make herself memorable upon the first meeting, but because of the fact that Mirai keeps to herself for a majority of the time. Even when she is first introduced into the series, it seems as if she is a person who distances herself from others until her true personality is exposed.
She is disconnected from a majority of the world, isolating herself from her peers and rejecting any sort of company consistently. Not only is the reason because she is a Spirit World Warrior, but also because of the fact that she is a member of a family with cursed blood. For the majority of her years as a child, Mirai was kept secret from a majority of society. Despite the Inami Clan adopting her into their family, she was more than often left alone and locked inside her room to play by herself. Fortunately enough, a child of the Inami Clan did begin to interact with Mirai, and quickly became her best friend—Yui Inami. During this time, Mirai felt as if she was a normal girl despite the majority of the family still keeping their distance from her because of her friendship with Yui, and cherished it deeply. But unfortunately this blissful life would soon end with Mirai staining her hands with blood. Yui's blood. When Yui was suddenly possessed by the Hollow Shadow, Mirai killed her out of fear that she may lose her own life, and the guilt carried with her for years after the incident. This also influences Mirai's deep seated fear on killing another youmu, which she had fortunately overcame after the encouragement of Akihito Kanbara.
Akihito Kanbara, a half-youmu and half-human, was at first looked at as a target to Mirai. Upon their first meeting, she was quick with attacking and even stabbing him into the chest with her blade, and was surprised when he exposed that he was immortal despite her fatal blows. The beginning of their relationship was mainly of Mirai chasing him around the school in attempts of killing him, in which we are exposed of her more clumsy side. Despite being a Spirit World Warrior, it should be noted that Mirai is terribly clumsy in some of her fights due to her hesitation or from being distracted. We are first introduced to her clumsy side when she chases Akihito, again, and ends up with a bucket on her head and exclaiming that she was unable to see. Another example of this is when she wakes early to wake Sakura Inami, Yui's younger sister, scolding her to do her hair and dress properly despite her hair being a mess and having mixed socks on.
Though that should not make anyone look down on Mirai's abilities. Her clumsiness is rarely seen, especially further into the series, and she exposes herself to be a well adapted warrior especially after she has overcome her fear of having to kill. It should also be noted that in terms of battle, Mirai is a quick thinker in a majority of her decisions, and fortunately her blood allows her to have a large range of attacks that can help her in many situations.
It should also be noted that while Mirai is usually in the background in most conversations, she does have a voice of her own. One that usually jumps to conclusions whenever Akihito takes some sort of action that she find inappropriate. An example of this is when she visits his house one day and notices another pair of shoes, in which she immediately thought that he was having another classmate over due tot the fact that he has no siblings. She will often state her displeasure by stating that "it's unpleasant", and go as far as start tweeting about her misfortunes or opinions, which normally results to her being flamed for her depressing tweets. She can also appear to be a grumpy old man, as stated by Akihito, especially when it comes down to her bonsai. When a few classmates hit a ball into the club room, she immediately runs in and shouts at them for their behavior.
Another interesting fact about her is that she is somewhat of a penny pincher. Because of her financial issues, Mirai is often careful with how much money she spends, and pays close attention to discounts and events where food is given with no charge. A majority of her income comes from slaying youmu, and unfortunately Mirai is often left with the bad end of the stick and hardly making much of any sort of income. Because of this, she takes up the job offer Ai gives her, despite not being fully aware that it was a modeling job. Still, she takes it with only some protest.
And despite this much information, someone who is only aware of this much has only scratched the surface of Mirai's personality. Due to her almost overwhelming amount of guilt that she had placed upon herself after Yui's death, Mirai no longer saw herself as human. And despite meeting someone who was half-youmo and suffered with the fact that half of him was the enemy of the Spirit World Warrior Society, Mirai continued to argue that they were nothing alike due to the fact that he had friends and people who cared about him despite that half of him. When Akihito expresses his feelings of not thinking of himself as 'normal', Mirai begins to realize just how selfish she had been this far in the series. When the Hollow Shadow appeared, she thought that it would be the only chance she would have to overcome the guilt of killing Yui, despite the many protests of others when it had first appeared in the outskirts of the city. Even when Akihito came and told her not to do so, she ignored his words and continued to face the Hollow Shadow. While this does expose just how far Mirai is willing to go in order to escape from her grief, it also exposes that she can be selfish at times.
It is only when the Hollow Shadow possess Akihito that Mirai begins to realize how she has finally met another person who thought of themselves as something other than human. It pained her, and despite his youmu half exposed and knocking their friends unconscious, Mirai approaches him with tears in her eyes, wrapping her arms around him and holding him for dear life. She felt terrible with how she had allowed herself to be so selfish without acknowledging the suffering he had experienced, but it also allowed her to open her eyes in realization that despite the life she lived, she needed to move on not only for the people around her, but for herself.
"Nothing will change if I spend all of my time lost and floundering."
And one of those steps of moving on was with reforming the bond she had with Yui's sister, Sakura, who suddenly had a goal to kill Mirai after Yui's death. Despite their first encounter leaving Mirai hesitant to fight back, their second fight leads to Mirai confronting her without hesitance in attempts of apologizing. She exposes her strength, and even saves Sakura when her weapon backfires and attempts to devour her. And when Sakura decides to follow Mirai back home, she takes care of her as a sister would: preparing her for school, doing her best to feed her, and even encouraging her to at least put a mark into her school work despite not having to actually be there.
Though she still does continue to distance herself from others when she feels conflicted, it should be noted that Mirai is a terrible liar and thus terrible in terms of hiding her emotions. When she is either struck with depression or put into the position where the decision rests upon her, Mirai will appear aloof and obviously in deep thought even when she is surrounded by the people she cares for. The main reason behind this is because of the fact that she does not wish for her friends to become worried because of her own problems. Though when she is confronted by Sakura with her distance, she immediately begins to break down, crying as Sakura held her, but continues to keep her issues to herself.
When Akihito is once again a overwhelmed by his youmu half, Mirai is left with the decision that she either kill him before the Calm ends or allow his human half to disappear forever. This being her mission from the very beginning, Mirai makes the decision that she will approach and kill Akihitio. But during her conversation with Hiroomi, Mirai does reveal that she feels as if she was really cursed because of this, and wished that she had never met Akihito if she knew that this was going to be the fate between the two of them.
In truth, this is a contradiction. Mirai does genuinely feel as if her entire life has been nothing but finding a glimpse of hope that only resulted to her drowning in cruelty and despair. But at the same time, she cares deeply for the friends that she has made the past six months, and has even developed feelings for Akihito. Though she told Hiroomi that she would kill Akihtio, she instead chooses to sacrifice herself. With the knowledge of what her blood is capable doing during the Calm, she made the decision that instead of killing the person she cares about most, she would instead want to sacrifice herself in order to relieve him from his burden.
Abilities/Powers:
Mirai is a Spirit World Warrior who has cursed blood coursing through her veins. Her clan is looked down upon other Warriors, with their ability to form weapons by using their own blood. If she is to unwrap the bandages from her right hand, Mirai can use her blood to form a sword, which is just as sturdy as one made out of any metal until she experiences anemia.
Her blood is also able to take the form of something like a shield, which is even capable of blocking specialized bullets from Sakura's gun. This does take up a good amount of her blood though, but the process of it is done quickly and she is even able to make one at the very tip of her blood blade. She is also capable of manipulating her blood and makin several blades appear, in order to attack multiple enemies.
Mirai also has a ring that she keeps on her right pinky finger that she rarely takes off. The reason behind this is because upon taking it off, it will splatter her cursed blood, releasing a potent poison that is capable of destroying her opponent's internal organs. It has also been proven to destroy plant life, which happened after she defeated the Hollow Shadow and her blood rain from the sky. She is usually seen releasing by either swinging or stabbing her sword into her opponent and then releasing her cursed blood. It should also be noted that even if she were to touch her own blood, she will not be affected by it. Mirai can also absorb her blood after using it.
In terms of other physical strengths, Mirai is quick on her feet and can easily jump and touch the top of a basketball backboard.
Items/Weapons: Her glasses, the clothes on her back, her ring, and an extra pair of bandages.
Sample Entry:
[ There's a brief moment of silence at the end of the call before an intake of breath a cuts the silence. ]
H-Hello, ah... I've only recently got here, but I would like to ask if anyone knows someone by the name of Akihito? He's... [ She bites her tongue, which leaves a long pause for the person listening. ] He's a friend of mine, and so are Mitsuki and Hiroomi Nase, so if you know any of them, please tell me where I could possibly find them.
Also, are receiving and sending calls the only thing this device can do? I tried to see if I could go on my blog, but it doesn't seem to be working.
Th-Thank you to anyone who answers, I... I'll be waiting.
[ But before the call ends, there's a sudden gasp before the sound of the device hitting against something.... again... and again. ]
Ahh! How unpleasant! Why did I have to drop it!?
[ Fortunately enough, the call ends before the phone reaches the bottom of the steps. ]
Sample Entry Two:
When Mirai wakes, her heart pounds hard against her chest in realization that she was in an area completely unfamiliar to her. But that doesn't keep the rhythm to continue beat hard when she climbs out of the bed and turns her head around the room.
"Senpai..." Her voice is low, and hesitant, with the thought of Akihito in his youmu form flashing in her head. The scene replaying as she remembered her lunge towards her friend with blade in hand. She takes a look at her right hand, completely bandaged and with her ring still on her pinky finger. Stands of strawberry blonde brushed against her cheeks as chestnut colored eyes glanced out the window, noticing the billboard with the giant words 'HAVEN' written across.
"Where... where is this place?"
Is this Heaven? Certainly not. A person with cursed blood who would betray and lie to the person they care for most would be better suited in Hell. But that thought alone with her last moments back home brought a sting to her eyes, with her stomach tying in tight knots as she thought of how and why she would be brought here. She nearly feels sick, just thinking about this, but instead of sinking back into her bed in despair, the girl walked forward, opening the door to her apartment and quickly running down the hall.
She didn't make contact. She was sure of that. If anything... he was here, too.
